The tapping of the quill tip on the parchment below had made the dots grow larger forming a blot that still laid unnoticed by Sarah. Deep in thought she pondered over the secrets that laid unspoken between her and Rufus. Restless nights, whispered rumors and guests within the privacy of the royal households.

Sighing, she looks down at the blot of ink and scrunches the parchment up into her hand only to toss it onto the floor. Rufus’ new markings and late night walks worried her more than his silence. Not knowing what they may mean consumed her thoughts. Her senses told her that they were something only her husband may control, thus making her helpless.

Another helpless situation was the matter of Naissia Dragonbane. Sarah’s nagging feeling that more lies with this friendship than what could be seen, refused to leave her. Nothing Rufus had said or had done caused the gnawing feeling. It was the woman…..she remained an unknown. Why had she not gotten her life in order and moved forward, dear Huma laid dead for a long time. Why did she still cling to another woman’s husband for support and guidance? Sarah knew that the widow Dragonbane had many friends yet she remained within Rufus' household. Rumors had circulated that she had designs upon Sarah’s husband that were more than any loyal friend should possess. She had avoided Sarah and had yet to seek out any sort of relationship with the Sultana, as if Naissia wanted to hide something. Out of respect for Huma, Rufus had taken the widow woman into his home yet she had not returned likewise respect in the reaching out to the wife of her savoir. No matter how Sarah had approached this subject with Rufus, it remains. With any other man that had been shown such devotion by a lonely female, wouldst easily become beguiled. And yet it was true she had gained her husband’s confidence but so had other hu-man females.

Nodding to herself, Sarah reaffirms the vows Rufus pledged to her with the knowledge that no matter what designs this woman had upon her husband he would remain faithfully hers. Shrugging off the feeling of helplessness Sarah noted that only rumors were known. Rumors always swirl around the powerful so that the weak may appear strong. Yet the rumors and the situation hanged between them like a heavy weight. Again she must trust and remain the helpless observer, for this is something only Rufus may control. “I have done all I can….I have given warning, pointed out the improprieties that exist and my worries upon the situation. Tis all I can do, now I shall trust in Rufus’ resolve and love. For a hu-man he has the inner strength of a clansmen, and I will steer my future by it.” Sarah vows to herself.

Raising from the desk and feeling restless, Sarah goes out onto the balcony. Was it her helplessness that drew Seryas to her side? Or was it more? His attentions are what Sarah had been missing from Rufus. Either busy with Regency duties, tending to his studies, friends or just traveling the realm her husband had become unattended towards her needs. Seryas’ touch and mild words soothed her and she worked hard to resist his strong will. Her love for her husband had kept her safe from his power thus far. With a shake of her shoulders she shrugs off the feeling of being drawn from her true soulmate. “I am a De’Fiona and Oryan, Sultan-queen of Nujel’m, high elf and elder of my clan! Not some stupid and foolish female. Whatever power this Seryas Triasmos has it will not conquer over my will nor my love for my husband. For our love and mutual devotion can not be broken by the needs of a lonely widow or the will of a powerful man. “

Empowered by her renewed resolve Sarah leaves the balcony and returns to sit down at the desk. Taking the quill once more and a fresh sheet of parchment she pens a note to Sir Triasmos.

Dear Seryas Triasmos,

I hope that this note finds you in good health and that you have held some tutoring sessions with my son and heir. I have instructed Ameer Naj’m and his servants to accommodate your schedule in the effort to gain an education.

I see no further need for us to converse on this but if you still have questions please contact the palace. His Lordship and I will make every effort to schedule time to meet with you.

Ameer Naj’m’s education is of the utmost importance to both his parents.

With respect,

Matron Sarah Oryan, Sultana of the Empire of Nujel’m

Blowing on the wet ink she smiles, “this should make it quite clear that whatever his previously laid plans were, they have been truncated
