She thinks to herself after long contemplating the situation and decides it is best for all if she just tells him that she apologizes for mistaking his actions for sexual actions. She truly did believe that he had some ulterior motive, and when the others made it plain that they thought the same thing she did nothing to stop them. And if his witnesses were correct she must have conveyed that to his guild mates but she truly didn't remember doing so. He was, after all, a member of a group that had done so to her in the past. Why it is perfectly understandable, she thinks to herself though he will never accept that for an apology so she decides just not to bring it up.
She wonders how this man with his fanatically twisted beliefs of what justice is along with his complete disregard for compassion and humility will fair alongside the virtues. She thinks and compares them with the caliber of Humanis and their ideals and slants on the virtues and wonders if this is not the case with these Samurai.
She must try to understand how he thinks. Their cultures are so very different. She reads over a book she has found of some of their history and beliefs. She is shocked as she reads some of the things there. In the empire of the Samurai they kill their children if they have birth maladies and their wife may also be killed at the discretion of the husband for the offense of bearing imperfect children. Women have no rights but what their husband gives them. She thinks to herself, there is no honor in samurai tradition it is all about pride and shame. She reads on. If you live in their society you can not make a mistake, it becomes a flaw in one's character and depending on the degree it is grounds for death. She thinks this is not a way to create a benevolent society. As she reads she realizes that the Samurai's beliefs leave out some very basic virtues that the guilds of the Virtues hold dear and she wonders and worries that without the virtues if they will find peace in these lands outside their island home. She feels sorry for the women of their society.
They are not a bad people she thinks, but perhaps some tempering of the virtues would do well for them. She decides to speak to the Celebrant at the Church of the Virtues at next opportunity. Perhaps even a missionary to go to them and offer them a cultural exchange. Her enlightenment about their culture and the thought of helping seems to ease some of her hard feelings.
She determines to remember their differences when planning how she will speak to Tai. She takes out a quill, ink and paper to make some notes, trying to be as diplomatic as she can and calls upon the virtue of humility in writing what she will say.
She finishes her notes and then quills another note. She carefully rolls it up and attaches it to the leg of a pigeon and sends it off to find Tai.
Shogun Otori Yotogi,
I hope this note finds you and your future bride well and all is going smoothly with the preparations for your wedding. May the blessings of love and fine children be yours. I realize that the invitations were sent to the entire community and knowing your feelings for myself I will humbly decline attending. This is your special day and I do not want to bring a dark cloud and bad memories upon your door step.
There is another purpose of this communication is to set up a time before you wedding where we may speak. I have reconsidered your demands and wish to make concessions for the sake of peace in out lands and honor restored where it rightfully belongs.
After great contemplation and soul searching I have come to the conclusion that those that witnessed the events of such a long time ago may have been clearer than my memory of the events as they played out. If you will allow me in humility to come to you and speak of apology before you, your future bride and any you feel you would like to be present I would be most grateful.
Humbly yours,

Tai kneeled in his zen garden at his house thinking of all the things that had passed before this evening.
Molly had come to him in the city he had been elected to help lead. She had cleared his name.
No more would he think upon that time of the past. As he had told her it would be as if it had never happened. _________________ "He's been fired from the Shrimp Boat?" -- Charlaine Harris "Living Dead In Dallas." |
