The moonlight glittered in her worried, emerald eyes. It was another night that Earendil couldn't sleep. She sat at one of the windows in her room, gazing out into the Malas night, and the nearby abyss. Her coughing and wheezing had returned. A few days before, she had visited the Dryad and bought some more of the herbs that had helped her when her family and she visited the Dryad's grove. Earendil had hung the dried flowers and herbs up on the wall above the headboard of her bed, in hopes that the potent fragrance, which helped her before, would help her again. Tonight she was trying to inhale the scent, but it didn't seem to be helping her ability to breathe. It seemed only one of the many temporary solutions that had been found. Earendil wondered if a permanent solution even existed. She was tired of getting sick, tired of making her parents worry, tired... tired... just tired. She wanted to be able to sleep at night, and not fall asleep during the day, especially on days when her family was together and planning an outing. Lately, it felt as if she was only getting worse. If she could make it through this night, she would search out an answer, herself. A violent fit of coughing stopped her for several moments before she could do anything else. She sat on her bed and buried her face in her sleeve, hoping to muffle the sound and not wake anybody else in the house. After the fit had passed, she went over to her closet and chests and pulled our a few things: a couple changes of clothes, some traveling supplies, and an outfit to change into. She had laid out the outfit and was beginning to put the rest of the things in her pack, when she suddenly felt very weak and had to lay down for a while.
"Just rest a minute, then try again," Earendil thought to herself.
So, after several minutes, she slowly sat up, then tried to stand up, but wasn't strong enough yet. She sank down next to her bed. She crossed her arms on it and put her head down.
"I must be sicker than I thought," she whispered to herself.
She then heard footsteps in the hall and knew she would be caught before she could leave... The footsteps were her mother's. Cassandra had not been sleeping well, due to her recent pregnancy, and had been awake when Earendil had her coughing fits. Trying not to wake her husband, Legerion, Cassandra slipped out of bed and went downstairs to check on Earendil, knowing Earendil had been sick often ever since she was a baby.
"Earendil, are you al..." Cassandra cut short, seeing Earendil's pack open with some extra clothes inside, and the outfit laying on the bed. "And just where do you think you are going little lady?"
Earendil raised her head a little, weakly, and looked at her Mother for a moment, then put her head back down.
"I'm tired of being sick, Mom, tired of worrying you." Another coughing fit started, but ended fairly quickly. "I need to find something that will really help me... for good."
Cassandra came over and sat down next to her. She took her daughter in her arms.
"Did you think you needed to search all by yourself? Did you think your father and I wouldn't help you?" she asked Earendil.
Earendil enjoyed the moment, being in her mother's arms again.
"I... I don't know..." Earendil replied, feeling herself getting weaker. "I didn't... really think... Just needed.. to... find ..it.."
"Well, let's get you into bed first. After you've rested, you and I will search together."
Earendil did her best to get up and into bed, but Cassandra still had to help her. Cassandra pulled the blankets up over her, then put the outfit on the bed, back in the closet.
"What... about... Daddy?" Earendil asked weakly.
"You rest. I will talk to him."
"Mmm.."
Seeing that Earendil was almost asleep, Cassandra smiled a bit, though her eyes were filled with worry, then leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. Earendil smiled a bit in her sleep.
"Good night," Cassandra whispered, then quietly left the room and returned upstairs, hoping to be able to get a little sleep herself, but also knowing that the trip to find a cure for Earendil would not be a simple one. The trip may take longer than either of them thought. _________________
