He had been away for quite some time. Events beyond his control had necessitated his leaving right in the middle of the crisis with the Order in Cove, but Max knew the members of the League who remained and Lady Lia's Guardians had the skills to keep Vesper safe while he was away.
He mistakenly thought his return would be to a warm welcome from his guild. Yes, it was true he was returning unannounced, but they were usually not to far from the Village. If they were away, Max knew where to find them.
Tonight was different. After checking each of thier homes, and their usual haunts, he was dismayed at their being nowhere to be found. He looked forward to seeing his guildmates again, but he was alone.
Realizing they should be expected to find other forms of entertainment outside of waiting for him to return home, he turned his thoughts to another he missed greatly while away and longed to see.
While away Max had much opportunity to think about how he felt about her. There was no mistaking they had little in common, yet he was drawn to her. He questioned his own feelings in the beginning, but the night she was injured, and he was able to tend to her was a sign to Max they might very well be able to make it work. Of course, he really had no idea how she felt about him other than her thoughtfulness in sending along a gift with Brianha for him, but that was enough, he decided, for him to make his feelings known to her.
The small amount of time they had been able to spend together had been enough for Max to develop some strong feelings, whether she felt the same or not.
Notwithstanding, he had returned from being away, and he missed her more than he thought he would. He would go to her and tell her of his feelings tonight!
What he found was harder than the dissapointment he felt at the lack of guildmembers in the Village. Her house, although still standing, was practically empty. He was crushed. For once he was planning on showing more feeling and emotion than many thought him capable of, and now he feared the worst.
"Perhaps she has found another, and moved with him." Max said quietly to the dust his cloak had stirred up. "I have likely missed my chance, due to my being away. I should have told her before I left!"
He knew not where to find her, or if he even wanted to know what had happened. He was certain they would cross paths again in the future, but for now he lamented what could have been and quietly spoke the words that would have him home in an instant.
On his way up to the rooftop to sit in his throne and look out over Arcana's gardens, he passed by his bed where she had laid, injured, and found himself thinking it odd and sad at the same time that as very very cold as she was to the touch, it made him feel even warmer inside. _________________ -Max of Vesper, Super Pally Perma NoOb. |
