Lady Nightshade sat in the office of her main factory the toys were doing splendidly.

The newest addition of animal dolls was doing quite well in the marketplace. A soft tap on the door and she looked up after pouring over her books for the third time.

Enter..

Milady Nightshade, How goes it... A timid man walked into the room his head balding slightly and tinges of grey at his temples. He was finely dressed, obviously wealthy yet he glanced at her wearily.

She put a lovely fake smile on her face and turned her attention to the man. Aaaah Carrington so good of you to come at my request. I have been expecting you. Carrington looked at her timidly. I came at once Milady is there a problem?

NO! Quite the contrary Carrington! For the past few months since we released my dolls into mass market they have been doing splendidly. The new factorys creating them are overflowed with orders from the toy stores. I stopped in one the other day in Skara, there were so so many dolls on the shelves. They were selling like crazy. I am very pleased. Is there anyway we could step up distribution and get my dolls more than just locally distributed?

Carrington looked surprised, he had never seen her so excited, so enthusiastic and happy. It was catching, rather infectious really. He smiled at her for the first time since they had begun working together and she chuckled softly. She knew how to get what she wanted..
Yes! Yes of course Milady! There have only been a few problems with shipping laws and such but I will take care of it at once. Milady can you handle the growing demand though?

Nightshade smiled mischeiviously. You bring me the orders Carrington, and I will produce. Of course I am concerned that quality is to be maintained but I will see my lead about that, Thomas can start visiting the other factories. I would hate for there to be any defective or dolls tampered with. My only concern is that these dolls are used to bring joy and happiness to so so many children....

Carrington looked at her for a moment, in her black clothing and pale skin, her bright green hair. The statement sounded unnatural. You know Carrington, she said softly, All my life people have judged me based on my looks. I wear dark clothing, so I must be evil, I practice my familys art of the arcane so that makes me evil. She shook her head softly aaah but I will always be misunderstood, I just do what is natural for me. Carrington was surprised, he felt a little guilty as he had thought much of the same about her. A tear shown in her eye and he felt for a moment that the toymaker might just cry.... He said in a soothing voice, do not worry Milady, we will see it done, we will not rest until your dolls are in the hands of every child. She smiled at him, you are a good sort Carrington.

She stared at him evenly. Carrington I am shutting down the other factories...

Carrington rubbed his head in agitation. What do you mean, we just hit mass production, the dolls are doing so well your making tons of money.

There was a heavy pause in the room and Shade stared at him as if she didnt know what to say. I only want one factory, like it use to be, with just Xandy, Narcissa and myself to oversee it.

Why? He pleaded with her, this makes no business sense! Your services will no longer be needed Carrington, it has been a pleasure working with you. I will see that you get a handsome retirement sum. He stared at her, your getting rid of me.

NO! she said a bit strongly, no, this is not getting rid of, when I get rid of someone they are, pausing for effect, gone.

See that the people in the other factories recieve two weeks pay and if they are young that they are properly placed. Carrington look shocked at her kindness but remained silent. She had always been cold, unfeeling, driven by some desire for power. She looked at him carefully, I also do not want any of this discussed with the other two. They wont understand...

You dont want Narcissa and Xandy to know? The incredulous sound in his voice made her pause. She was feeling so odd this was all so unlike her. No they must not I started this business I will make some excuse for closing the other factories and only keeping the main one. As for my kindness, if word gets out, your life is forfeit.

The last part was said coldly with deadly intent and Carrington found it odd that anyone would want to hide their kindness. There is a large sum of money waiting for you when you have completed what I have set for you.

Now go, I have much work to do.

Carrington shook his head slowly, Aye Milady I will do as you say. He left the room totally baffled.

He did not see the tears in Nightshades eyes as the door shut quietly behind him. Shaking her head she felt trapped and lost. Oh somebody please, please help me....
