I had been of the adventurous type, from an early age. Always wondering what it was that lay just two steps beyond my horizon. Never content with where I was or what I knew, Hungering for more. As a youth I would take long adventured deep into the woods that surounded my home. On one of these trips, I came across what appeared to be a shrine.
Not knowing for what it had been built or why, only added fuel to the fire to learn all there was. Each day I would go to the shrine and study it, looking for the key to unlock all its secrets within.
One day as I arrived at my shrine, I spied an old man sitting at it. He seemed to know the shrines true purpose. After he finished meditating and readied himself to leave, I announced my presence. He seemed a bit shocked maybe even mad, that I had been watching him. But as I asked my many questions, He seemed to accept me. He explained to me the story of the shrine, and that there were many more throughout the land. Each one devoted to a virtue. He explained it like this...
"Within this world live many people with many different ideals, and this is good. Yet what is it within the people of a land that separates the good from evil? the cherished from the disdained? VIRTUE I say it is. And virtue is the logical outcome of a people who wish to live together in a bonded society. For without virtue as a code of conduct which people maintain thier relations with each other, the fabric of that society will become weakened. For a society to grow and prosper, each must grant the others a common base of consideration."
The old man explained how there were 8 of these shrines and that each one had a meaning for someone pure of heart and a soul seeking to learn. He said that this shrine was for Justice.... here I learned that justice was a devotion to the truth, tempered by love.
the next was Spirituality It tells that it is the concern with ones innerbeing and how one deals with truth, love and courage.
Compassion... It is non-judgemental empathy for ones fellow creature.
Honesty, Is the scrupulous respect for the truth and the willingness never to deceive oneself or others.
Humility.. Is preceiving one's place in the world, not according to ones own accomplishments, but according to the intrinsic value of all individuals.
Valor.. Is the courage to take action in suport of ones convections.
Honor... Is the courage to stand for the truth, against all odds.
last but not least
Sacrifice... It is to give oneself in the name of love. He stated that if I chose such a path and followed the teaching of each one, Then combine all the knowledge from them to make one virtuious path.
I would become a true avatar, and be granted the ability to change my earthy image combined symbol of these virtues...
