Dealing with orcs
By nature orcs are suspicious of any non-orc and even among some orcs of different tribes.
It takes work to build up a trust or anything approaching frienship with an orc but it is possible.
First off, realize an orc is an intellegent thinking creature and is not a pet or an animal. Treating him as a lesser being will result in instant hostility.
Second show respect but not fear. Orcs respond well to non-orcs that are brave. A seasoned warrior who has slain orcs will be respected by orcs more than a sniviling coward who is considered no better than a slave.
Third, orcs like presents and gold. Any item given an orc will usually result in a positive response.
Unfortunately some races are almost always treated with hostility by orcs unless an individual of that race goes to great lengths to dispel an orcs hatred. Elves and Dwarves top that list. Very few elves and orcs ever become friends, although a cool truce is often possible.
Halflings and Humans are treated with an uneasy neutrality at first. These races usually have the easiest time dealing with orcs.
Half-orcs - by nature most orcs treat half-orcs with contempt. They see them as mongrels unfit for anything but slave work. However, half-orcs are generally much smarter than full orcs and often end up leading an orc tribe or at least lead from behind the scenes. Half-orcs often fill necessary roles such as scribes, diplomats and messengers in an orc tribe.
Slavery - Orc society tolerates slavery but never practices it on a wide scale. Slaves are of two groups. The first are those fit for nothing but heavy labor. These are the bottom of orc society and rarely live long. The second are craftsmen of all races captured or kidnapped.
These perform necessary services to the tribe and are often treated better than lower classed free orcs. Nevertheless, a slave's life in an orc tribe is not easy and many seek to escape.
Orc society itself is based on might makes right. The stronger rule the weaker. An old orc would rather die defending his place in orc society than live with the shame of defeat.
This society is very militaristic and male dominated. The warchief or warboss is the orc that "clomped" his way to the top and holds it for as long as he is able.
"Clompy games" are held periodically to determine the current pecking order in society.
Females are allowed in the orcish male society but few choose to do so. Most learn skills like cooking, craftmaking at the like. Females weld considerable power since they are the "life-bearers". Females can and often do entertain several suitors who shower them with riches in order to become their mate. Once orcs make, they are surprisingly monogomous and a typical orc litter is about 8 orcs. Generally a female can expect to have 3 litters.
Shardies [npc orcs] are considered low intellegent "traitorous" orcs to other orcs. The reason for this traitorous feeling is not currently known among non-orcs, but probably stems from their alliance to Minax.
This represents only a general overview of orc language and society. Keep in mind that each tribe has its own unique culture and some facts presented here may be slightly different depending on the orc.
