The Evil Mage

by Keeshi

Enter young apprentice, and be seated, for ye may in fact be here for quite some time. I see the awe in thine eyes, and ye are correct, the volumes behind me contain the spells necessary to perform the darkest of rites, and the most powerful of all magicks. However, that is not why I hath summoned thee to my chambers, for now we speak on other things. Ye look puzzled, nary fear young one, I wish only to know why ye seek to walk this dark path. Let me explain to ye the types of evil mages one may run across.

First there is the hermit, the mage that secludes himself from the rest of society, and performs the darkest of all rites. These mages are shunned by all, their magick is tainted and is a threat to us all. Most, if seen by any are slain on site, however; this is no easy task. Normally their magick is much more powerful than the average mage's, so they are generally hunted by groups.

Next I speak of the mages who wish to govern all society; these mages generally are very active within the populace, and often disguise their dark forms with cloaks of goodness. More often than not they take on positions of authority within a community, and from this position let loose their terrible magicks upon the unsuspecting peoples.

Then there are those like myself, who use the dark arts to our advantage. We constantly seek out new forms of magick, which we may manipulate to achieve our ultimate goal. What that goal may be is determined by the individual, but the result is still the same.

Think long on what I've said here today young one, I must retire now. If ye are still here in the morning then we shall begin thy training, if not; twill be a pleasure to destroy ye. Evil night young one, may ye walk in darkness forever.

Ah, you are asking, "Why does a mage such as yourself speak your mind in a document dedicated to evil?" While not dedicated to evil, I have many opportunities available to me that those who walk in darkness do not. Sit, young seeker. I will speak of who I am and how I walk this world. I will not give you my name, for names help give a warning to those who would avoid me. Call me Sunith, or merely 'Master.' *grins slyly*

‘Tis a narrow path I walk, 'tween the darkness and the light. I make it sound more purposeful and dramatic than it is, but in reality I care more for my magical studies than for anything else in this world or the next. I will often return acts in the spirit they are shown to me... a warrior who gives of his last gold to a youth begging in the street may inspire me, and I would find a way to aid him when next I had the chance. A cowardly enchanter who strikes a foe already weakened by a monster may find himself targeted similarly if I have occasion. However, if the cowardly enchanter were to ask my help in exchange for scrolls of lore, or if the youth mentioned to me later that the warrior carried a magical artifact I wished to study...the situation could change drastically.

Yes, untrustworthy is a term I would use for myself. ‘Tis a side benefit from the path I walk. Those who are truly evil are often sighted for what they are, and therefore lack the capability for mischief that I possess. If I were to meet people in town preparing for a dungeon jaunt, they would have no 'tell' and very well might invite me along for additional magical support. If I am reading a book, or working on a spell, and am untimely with a cure or a heal... I am sure they will accept my apologies. I will even seek to gather the items for the dead person until they can be resurrected, for this gives me a good opportunity to seek items of power and lore. A looter I am not, but if the recently deceased does not question me about those two scrolls of Flamestrike that made their way into my pocket... ‘tis his folly for not keeping track of his belongings! ‘Tis not malice on my part, only that others are so unimportant next to my studies, that I care not for their happiness or sorrow.

A low profile is the key. If you wish to destroy all comers, this path is not for you. If you wish to garner vast wealth, seek another to teach you. I make a good living, and can freely study my magics whenever. I dress in an unassuming manner. No bone helms or true-black robes for me! No shadow plate would I wear, or golden, even if I had the strength for it. I have a keen eye for the intelligence of others, and my studies among the Brotherhood of the Grim Rictus have made me a strong mage, and a patient meditator, and a deft wrestler. As I dabble in other forms of magic, I have some spirit speaking ability... and care little enough for any one skill, that if another school of magic arose that interested me, I would pursue it.

Enough. I tire of this and must get back to my studies. You may go... what is that? You cannot rise from the chair? Hmmmm, ‘tis most strange. I specifically cast a 'Bemusement' spell upon that chair, not a spell of adhesion. At least I think it was 'Bemusement' I intended to cast. I better go study what went wrong. Do you have any magical trinkets that might aid my research? *rummages through your pockets while you struggle* Hmm, no luck. Well, sure to figure it out eventually. Good eve. Do me a favor and shout every once in a while, just to remind me that you are down here. ‘Twould be very annoying if I forgot about you, and you died. The smells would interrupt my work for weeks! Then again, I could get some practice with re-animation and zombification... *strokes beard, lost in thought*

-goes to the door, removes a torch from its cresset, and leaves... leaving you in pitch darkness-
