If you're hiding. Hide. Behind stuff, in thicket, tall grass, a tree, moving quietly behind someone (at which point you should reveal yourself if they turn around, because you're standing right there). Stealthers should never be right out in the open unless you have rp to back this (id est, a wraith, illusion magics [id est, you actually cast invisibility before stealthing, or drank an invisibility potion, both of which will wear off]).

Alright, I got a little carried away with Brackets, but you catch my drift.

Hiders, hide only when environmentally suitable or at a reasonable distance, wraiths and illusionists get a bit more of a free pass here. From an RP perspective it is impossible to hide in the middle of an open field in front of six guys or even no people. There's just no cover in a completely open feild.

Either that, or craft a ghuille suit for your character. That would be pretty bamf.

But remember, rp first.

I disagree that hiding in plain sight should be done unless the rp supports it. It is a role playing game, and we are roleplayers, so we use the mechanics of the game as tools for roleplay. Just because we -can- do something doesn't mean we should. for instance, I can tell everyone in stonegate to put taming on their template, roll in neon clothes, and march a bunch of super dragons over to moonglow to release in thier HQ.

Yes, it is a roleplaying game. We are playing the roles of people who live in Sosaria, a land where our laws of physics and our grips to reality differ GREATLY from Earth. In this land of Sosaria, one can learn a great many things. For instance, the art of taming, which allows a person to walk out into the wild, talk to a deer for two minutes, and all of a sudden it is its loyal and faithful companion until death.

Hiding is the art of stepping into the unseen at any given moment. The hiding skill has ONE purpose. To hide. Now let's think about it this way. 100 skill points in hiding represents the same amount of training as 100 skill points on magery. A person with 100 magery has gone through rigorous training in order to bend the weave, creating fireballs, lightning bolts, summoning creatures from the abyss, bringing people back to life, creating portals from one place to another, and even changing his very appearance to that of many other things he wishes. The same amount of training it takes for a mage to do all of those things, another person with 100 hiding has spent rigorous training learning to do just ONE thing. Disappear.

It is not by any means unfeasible for me to believe that such is possible in the fantasy world that we are roleplaying in.

How proactive of you Cal *grins* this really just comes down to difference of opinion. When I rp a stealther I will always try to have an object around to rp behind. If I am a shadow walker there has to be something that creates shadows.

However, that is not to say that your opinion is wrong or mine. Just a preference really. I accept that there are entitys that can hide in plain view. Wraiths, Shadow walkers and I will even agree that perhaps Ninja have a skill I dont know about that allows this. It seems feasible. I am just going to say a normal human probalby doesnt, however this is my preference only.

It does not force anyone to follow it or do it. You are welcome to disagree and do it your way, hence the beauty of rp. I will respect and acknowledge you regardless of our opinion differences.

Heck there is tons of literature on vampires, lycans, wraiths, rping all sorts of things. Do I agree with every bit no, some of it is good some I dont care for but it doesnt mean I am right or they are wrong.

I just want to say its so great to see we can have open adult discussions on these forums that we all listen to each other and share ideas.

It makes me very happy.

In a DnD setting I completely agree with you, hiding would need some sort of shadow to hide behind.

My reasoning for not following that here, however, is that hiding is a "skill" in DnD, and not a "class." Those of you who know the DnD system will undoubtedly understand this better than someone else. In DnD, you don't take 10 levels of "hiding," you take 10 levels of a class. In that class, you can allocate skill points into hiding if you so choose. You definitely don't have to choose between hiding and 9th level spells.

I think if you use the search option at the top of the forum you will find all the same arguments from the last five times we've had it. I'm not trying to be a nay-sayer, just a realist. No one will ever agree 100% either way on this topic. You will get another five pages of people giving examples and arguments, but in the end, that is all it is.

Cal, half the community agrees with you and half agrees with the other viewpoint. I think I just summed it up, can we all hug and sing, now?

It's a healthy discussion. No need to put a knife in the throat of a discussion that won't turn ugly. Knife it if it does. There are fresh blood here that haven't been in on the discussion that might like to chime in. Just because a discussion has been had before, doesn't mean we can't have it again, especially when, as I said, it doesn't turn ugly.

i would equate hiding to being inside your house and able to see x number of tiles outside based on your game window...

it's a skill..it's useful and people have a means to 'sniff' out people who use it....it's not ghostcaming at least.

if you rule-out hiding in the open - is stealth going to go away entirely since technically people can't walk around invisible?

there has to be some lean to allow for multiple player types

Okay.

It adds to RP if you hide with "flair". It's not mandatory, of course. But it gives it a fuller flavor if you go the whole nine yards and "Becomes enveloped in a cloud of smoke" and then disappear, as opposed to winking out into nothing with no flavor text at all for others to read.

If only it were a little more like fel, where you can touch the invisible person, actually -poke- them and make it squirm a bit, to get an idea where they are hiding. For some reason body mass in trammel is different to body mass in fel, it is less substantial. That also leads me to wonder if food is less filling for feluccians if they try to eat trammel food... but I digress.

If you only have hiding and no stealth, you are stuck where you hid(likewise if you cast invis or drink an invis pot). Are you going to ignore people jabbing the once-occupied space (to their perception) with that sharp pitchfork? Or will you reveal, trickling blood and other bodily fluids?

In the end, I guess you can argue both very well put perspectives. It all comes down to -how- it is done. Why not make it enjoyable for all?

Agreed. The fel-ruleset, overall, is more conducive to RP in most, if not all factors. Hiding is one of the examples of such.

I think, ultimately, Ken, it all comes down to personal preference. I prefer to accompany my hiding skill with realism. While it irks me when others do not, unless they have role play backing that, I am not going to chastise them for their decision or make a move to ammend the rules to include perfect realism to some skills.

It's just what I prefer personally.

Also yes, ghillie suit, then you're straight to hide anywhere. Those things never stop working.

Something everyone should go by on each of the "grey area" skills UO has. As long as everyone accepts that their preferred way isn't the only way. That is, afterall, the respect we should extend to each other as roleplayers.

And now I want a ghillie suit.
